India outline & map grammar
Every map in a Mains answer starts here: a palm-sized India you can draw in about a minute, placed on the right latitude–longitude frame. Learn the frame and the anchor points, test yourself on the states, then practise drawing it in the lab.

The frame to remember
| What | Value from the map | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Northernmost | 37°05′N | Ladakh |
| Southernmost | 6°45′N | Andaman & Nicobar |
| Easternmost | 97°24′E | Arunachal Pradesh |
| Westernmost | 68°06′E | Gujarat |
| Southernmost (mainland) | 8°05′N | Tamil Nadu |
- Latitudes: about 8°05′N (mainland tip) to 37°05′N; the southernmost point of India, Indira Point in Great Nicobar, is at 6°45′N.
- Longitudes: about 68°06′E to 97°24′E, roughly 30° each way, which is why India looks almost square on a grid.
- The Tropic of Cancer crosses 8 states: Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Rajasthan, Tripura, West Bengal.
- The 82°30′E standard meridian (Indian Standard Time) crosses Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh.
Draw India in about a minute
- Draw a light square frame: 8°N to 37°N and 68°E to 97°E, with a line at the Tropic of Cancer (about 23½°N) through the middle.
- Mark four anchors: the Kutch bulge on the west at the Tropic, Kanyakumari at the bottom of the frame, the head of the Bay of Bengal just below the Tropic on the east, and the north-east corner.
- Join them: the peninsula as a downward triangle, the Himalayan arc across the top, and the North-East bulging out east.
- Add dots for Andaman & Nicobar to the south-east and Lakshadweep to the south-west.
- Then add only what the question needs: three or four labelled places, an arrow or a shaded area.
